Port Engineer

Job Summary
In this pivotal role, you will oversee the technical management, maintenance, and operational readiness of our vessels, ensuring they meet safety, regulatory, and performance standards. Your expertise will be essential in maintaining vessel reliability, coordinating repairs, and managing shipyard projects to support safe and efficient marine operations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily technical operations and maintenance programs for assigned vessels within the fleet
  • Coordinate vessel repairs, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance activities
  • Manage dry-dock projects, shipyard periods, and major repair work scopes
  • Develop repair specifications, budgets, and schedules for vessel maintenance activities
  • Monitor maintenance costs and ensure projects remain within approved budgets
  • Work closely with vessel captains and crews to address operational and technical issues
  • Coordinate with shipyards, contractors, and OEM vendors for repairs and equipment upgrades
  • Ensure compliance with USCG, ABS, and other regulatory requirements
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and technical documentation
  • Support vessel inspections, audits, and regulatory surveys
  • Identify opportunities to improve vessel reliability, performance, and operational efficiency

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent industry experience)
  • 5+ years of experience supporting marine vessel maintenance, fleet technical operations, or shipyard projects
  • Experience with tugboats, barges, workboats, or similar commercial marine vessels preferred
  • Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and vessel maintenance practices
  • Familiarity with USCG regulations and marine industry compliance standards

Nice to Have Skills

  • Prior experience as a Port Engineer, Marine Superintendent, or Fleet Technical Manager
  • Hands-on marine engineering or vessel operations background
  • Experience managing shipyard projects or vessel dry-dock periods
  • Knowledge of diesel propulsion systems (Caterpillar, Cummins, EMD, etc.)

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience supporting marine vessels and shipyard projects
