Dredging Superintendent
Job Summary
An experienced Dredging Superintendent is needed to lead day-to-day field and on-water operations for dredging and marine construction projects. This role is accountable for safe, efficient, and productive execution—providing direct leadership to field crews while coordinating personnel, dredging equipment, support vessels, materials, and daily activities. As the primary field liaison to the Project Manager, the Superintendent will drive production targets, schedules, safety performance, quality requirements, and contract compliance in demanding marine environments.
Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee daily dredging and marine construction operations to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in line with project requirements.
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate field crews, operators, deck personnel, equipment personnel, and other onsite workers.
- Monitor daily dredging production, equipment utilization, manpower, productivity, and overall project performance.
- Partner with the Project Manager to execute project plans, schedules, production goals, and milestones.
- Plan daily and look-ahead field activities to maintain continuous and efficient dredging operations.
- Coordinate the use and movement of dredges, support vessels, pipelines, pumps, heavy equipment, and other marine equipment as required by the project.
- Identify operational problems, production constraints, equipment issues, and schedule impacts; implement corrective actions in the field.
- Support schedule adherence and achievement of required completion milestones.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard discussions; enforce safety policies and project safety requirements.
- Identify unsafe conditions and hazards and ensure immediate corrective action is taken.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses, equipment issues, and significant field conditions to management.
- Maintain consistent communication with the Project Manager on production, manpower, equipment, safety, schedule, and project issues.
- Ensure compliance with contract requirements, project specifications, environmental requirements, permits, and applicable regulations.
- Forecast upcoming operational needs and identify potential issues before they impact production or schedule.
- Support mobilization and demobilization activities as required.
- Ensure policies, procedures, and standards are consistently followed.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of Superintendent (or comparable field leadership) experience on dredging and/or marine construction projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing field crews and marine/on-water operations.
- Strong understanding of dredging production, field operations, equipment coordination, scheduling, and project execution.
- Ability to plan and coordinate daily and look-ahead field activities.
- Proven ability to maintain production while enforcing strong safety standards.
- Experience working from project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements.
- Ability to identify operational problems and implement practical field solutions.
- Strong leadership skills for directing crews in demanding working environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear daily reports and documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and general PC applications.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively and remain at project locations for the duration of assignments.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in hot, humid, cold, wet, and other challenging weather conditions.
- Highly preferred: USACE dredging/marine construction experience; hydraulic dredging experience; familiarity with dredges, booster pumps, dredge pipeline, support vessels, and related marine/heavy equipment; USACE project management or applicable USACE certifications; OSHA certifications; First Aid/CPR; boating, marine equipment, or heavy equipment certifications; experience on federally funded or government marine construction projects.
