Assistant Port Engineer

Job Summary
An onsite opportunity in Houston, TX for an Assistant Port Engineer to support maintenance and overhaul activities (VRA & ROH) for one or more U.S. Government-owned vessels. Working under the supervision and direction of a Lead Port Engineer, this role contributes to vessel performance, regulatory compliance, and vessel management while supporting engineering projects and fleet initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with fleet special projects (including, but not limited to, TRANSALT development)
  • Monitor and analyze appropriate aspects of ship performance
  • Support marine engineering projects, including overhauls, maintenance, and repairs
  • Help interpret overhaul requirements and support the preparation of contract work specifications and cost estimates for repair, overhaul, conversion, and/or construction of ocean-going ships
  • Support regulatory compliance and vessel management activities
  • Participate in the Integrated Management System (IMS) by supporting documentation, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement in alignment with IMS policies, procedures, and objectives

Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the U.S. commercial or Government maritime industry in a shore-side or shipboard engineering role
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Active Secret Security Clearance or ability to obtain a government-issued security clearance
  • Understanding of ship operations and maintenance management, including overhaul planning and execution support
  • Ability to support complex maintenance/repair projects and work within established management systems (IMS)
  • USCG 2nd Assistant Engineer license or higher (preferred)

Preferred Education and Experience (must meet at least one of the following)

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience as a Port Engineer, having assisted in managing at least one shipyard dry-docking availability valued at a minimum of $3 million, demonstrating the ability to manage and negotiate complex projects (dry dock overhauls and repairs), or
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience aboard Government or commercial ocean-going ships (not less than 4,000 HP) as Chief Engineer, First Assistant Engineer, or Second Assistant Engineer, demonstrating effective management of maintenance and repair, or
  • Minimum five (5) years combining education and experience demonstrating the ability to manage and negotiate complex projects such as shipyard dry dock overhauls and other repairs on ocean-going ships, including one or more of the following:
    • Engineering-related degree (e.g., Marine Engineer, Marine Architecture, Mechanical Engineering)
    • Shipyard management experience
    • Port Engineer experience on a Government or commercial contract
    • Active-duty military experience performing duties substantially the same as a Port Engineer
